Exercise Metabolic Assessment

During an exercise metabolic assessment we measure your body’s response to exercise. You’ll wear a breathing mask connected to a computerized device, which measures the volume and composition of air that you exhale. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to breathe easily as you’ll be breathing the air in the room around you.

The exercise assessment starts at a relatively low intensity and gradually increases the workload. For example, if you’re a runner you’ll start by walking and gradually increase the speed on the treadmill until you reach your pre-determined running/jogging speed. You’ll then increase the workload by increasing the incline on the treadmill.

If you’re a walker the assessment will increase to a fast-paced walk and you’ll then adjust the incline; don’t worry - this isn’t a test, it’s an assessment designed to measure your body’s response to exercise.

Whether your goal is to get fit, lose weight, complete a 5k, do a time trial, compete in a triathlon or be competitive in an Ironman, the exercise assessment will give you valuable results that can make your training more effective. The technology we use is by New Leaf Health & Fitness Products, whose tag line truly reflects how you can use the results of the assessments: “TRAIN SMARTER, NOT HARDER”.

Once the assessment is complete you’ll know which Heart Rate Zones you should target in training in order to meet your fitness goals and how many calories you burn within each heart rate zone.

A metabolic assessment is not a test - you cannot pass or fail, and there is no magic number that you need to reach. The only numbers you can compare against are your own from previous assessments. If you were to compare the measurements over time you can establish whether you’re getting fitter and whether the training plan that you are following is effective given your fitness goals.

The exercise assessments are completed in a controlled environment such that no external factors such as weather, course terrain or competition are a factor.
