Do I need to do anything to prepare for the assessment?
For accurate results you should:
- Wear exercise clothes suitable for the modality you choose (treadmill, stationary bike or elliptical).
- Don’t eat or drink (except water) or use tobacco for at least 3 hours prior to the assessment.
- Don't work out the day before or the day of the assessment (avoid physical activity as much as possible before the assessment).
Can I do multiple EMR assessments on the same day (e.g. Bike and then run)?
Though this can be done it’s not advisable as the one assessment will impact the results of the other. We advise that you have a rest day before each assessment to ensure accurate results.
How often can I do an assessment?
As often as you’d like! Following a training plan you can expect the measurements for an EMR to change within 4 to 8 weeks.
What is measured during an exercise assessment?
- Aerobic Base Heart (AB)
- Anaerobic Threshold (AT)
- V02
- Optimal Heart Rate Training Zones
- Caloric Burn Rate during exercise
Is it time to start doing threshold training or should I be doing more slow steady training?
Historically athletes focused on interval training during the season and did long steady state training out of season, often referred to as building base. During an exercise assessment we measure threshold as well as Aerobic Base. Using these numbers we can establish where your metabolism is and whether you should be doing slow steady workouts or high intensity intervals in order to progress your fitness level and meet your goals.
Your Aerobic base heart rate is the heart rate at which your body is most efficient at burning fat as a fuel. During a fitness assessment we measure and report your Aerobic Base (AB) heart rate. Your Aerobic Base number change with exercise or the lack thereof. You can increase your aerobic base by doing base training (training mostly in Zone 2, with some training in Zone 1).
What is Anaerobic Threshold?
Anaerobic Threshold (AT) is the strongest predictor of athletic performance. It can be measured and expressed in various different ways. Anaerobic Threshold is expressed in terms of Heart Rate, or how many beats per minute your heart is beating when your body switches from Aerobic to Anaerobic exercise.
I’m a triathlete should I do a cycling and running assessment?
Your heart rate zones are different for each modality. We know that your Anaerobic Threshold is within about 10 – 15 bpm for each sport; however, Aerobic Base (AB) and heart rate training zones can be radically different for each modality.
Here are the actual results of one of our athletes to demonstrate (zone 1-3):

Though her Anaerobic Threshold is 15 beats apart (158 cycling and 173 running) her Aerobic Base is radically different (138 cycling and 163 running). If she were to use her cycling results during a running plan she would not be working hard enough or in the zones that her plan requires.
Additionally the number of calories burned in the zones is different (19.4 calories per minute running in Zone 3 and 13.4 calories per minute cycling in Zone 3)
What is Anaerobic Threshold?
In addition to toe clips, the stationary bike used for assessments has SPD pedals, you may choose to use them.
Can I use my own bike?
Yes, the assessments can either be performed on a stationary bike OR using your own bike and a CompuTrainer. Using the CompuTrainer the numbers (Aerobic Base and Anaerobic Threshold) can be provided in Watts allowing you to train using Power.
Please notify us if you plan to use your bike as additional time is required to set the bike up and we would like to ensure CompuTrainer availability.
How can an assessment benefit my power training?
Many of the numbers that are used for power training can be accurately measured during an assessment using your bicycle and the CompuTrainer, this takes the guess work out of Training with Power. Training using power is relatively new to the mainstream, as such different authors use different names for the same numbers, most of which are measured during a metabolic assessment.
Let us know which training plan or author you plan to follow and we will ensure that you understand the numbers relative to the author.
